PART 3: How to Find the Perfect Designer for Your Project

Welcome to Part 3 of our series on How to Have A Great Interior Design Experience! Before you jump into this week’s topic, make sure you check out Part 1 and Part 2!
Now that you have gone through the questions we talked about in Part 2, you likely have a pretty good idea of the type of project you’re working on, your vision, and your budgetary range. Don’t worry if you don’t have the vision nailed down, or you’re not sure if it’s possible. This is the time to dream big, and then once you’ve selected a designer, work together with them to settle on final options and let them figure out how to bring it to life.
But how do you find the perfect interior designer?
My best tip is always to start with your social media. A quick search on Instagram will for hashtags like, “interiordesigner(your city)” or “(yourcity)interiordesign)” will help you find local options, but if you aren’t able to find anyone local who fits your vibe, don’t be afraid to branch out! Many design firms, including Lofty Designs, offer virtual design packages that might be perfect for you.

Follow these other tips to find the perfect designer for your project!
1.) Know the style and vibe you want in your space.
You definitely don’t need to have the whole design mapped out, but you should have a good idea of the type of look you want. Do you want a space that is light and airy, or is dark and moody more your scene? Do you want monochrome finishes, or pops of color? Having an idea of this, and being able to describe how you want to feel in your space, will help you find designers who design in the style you’re looking for.
2.) Meet in person or on a video call.
This is one of the most important parts of any design project, because the chemistry between a designer and a client is incredibly important. Having someone design your home is an intimate process, and you’ll want to be sure you feel comfortable with the designer and their energy before you sign a contract.
3.) Discuss the design process with each potential designer and make sure it aligns with your needs.
Are you someone who wants to have the initial meeting and then you don’t need to hear anything else until the presentation is ready, or are you someone who wants to be included and get regular status updates along the way? Do you want to go shopping with them to help pick out finish options and decor? Know what level of involvement will make you feel most comfortable, and make sure to discuss those needs and expectations with potential designers. You’ll both feel much happier when you’re on the same page with the process!
4.) Ask for referrals!
Check with friends and family to see if they have any recommendations for designers they have loved, or whose work they can vouch for. Check online sites such as Yelp!, Facebook, or Google and look at the reviews and client testimonials. Working with someone who has established themselves as an industry leader and has a good reputation for being honest and fair will put you in a position to feel confident in the investment you’re making in your home.
